Impact of environmental pollution on public health in Europe

Environmental pollution is a frequently discussed topic by environmentalists and activists. The environment in which we live also has a major impact on our health. The effects of exposure to adverse environmental conditions can be severe and lead to the development of numerous diseases or health conditions.

Air pollution and water - two major threats

Air pollution, caused by the emission of harmful gases and particles by industry, transport and households, leads to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Water pollution, on the other hand, resulting from poor management of industrial and urban waste, affects the health of the digestive and nervous systems, provoking a variety of conditions from poisoning to endocrine disruption. Both forms of pollution require integrated educational and policy actions that raise public awareness and promote healthy practices.

Technology and environmental policy in pollution reduction

Modern technology is often proving invaluable in minimising the impact of pollution on health. Air filters, wastewater treatment systems, as well as innovations in renewable energy, all contribute to reducing harmful emissions. Equally important is the implementation and adherence to stringent environmental standards and regulations that ensure the long-term protection of public health. Environmental education and awareness, supported by public policies, enable the public to better understand the consequences of pollution.

The development of technology and close international cooperation in the field of environmental policy are essential in order to effectively combat environmental pollution. Only through such an integrated approach is it possible to ensure the health and well-being of present and future generations in Europe.

A detailed discussion of this issue will be on the agenda of the upcoming Patients' Organisations Forum, scheduled for 10-11 February 2025 in Warsaw.
