Year after year, although it is not a new phenomenon, there is an increased incidence of diseases of civilisation on our continent. Diabetes, heart problems, obesity and even some cancers are just some of the ailments that are increasingly affecting people in European countries.
There are several causes that negatively influence the development of this condition. The main risk factors include poor diet, lack of regular physical activity or chronic stress. The negative effects of the development of civilisation and urbanisation, such as environmental pollution, should not be forgotten either.
Diversity of causes of diseases of civilisation
Highly processed foods rich in saturated fats and simple sugars are a dietary staple for many Europeans. Inadequate nutrition can lead to an increase in obesity and diabetes. In addition, a decrease in physical activity, often resulting from a sedentary lifestyle, is another important factor contributing to the development of cardiovascular disease.
Chronic stress is another increasingly common cause exacerbating the problem described. In everyday life - professional and private - we are accompanied by a whole range of feelings, including frustration, anxiety and nervousness. Constant tension can lead to a range of negative consequences that will affect our health in the long term.
Environmental pollution, which includes air, water and soil pollution, equally affects the health of the European population - the risk of asthma, allergies and various forms of cancer is constantly increasing and poses a growing public health challenge.
A detailed discussion of these issues will be on the agenda of the forthcoming Patient Organisations Forum, scheduled for 10-11 February 2025 in Warsaw.
